Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing Programs and Professional Development

Our Rock Climbing programs are offered daily in the Ragged Mountain Area of Connecticut, the Gunks in New York, the Adirondacks, and in the North Conway/Rumney areas of New Hampshire.  We can offer programs at western areas upon request.

From first timers to experienced climbers to technical systems training to families, we do it all!

Beginner Rock Course:

Learn the basics of knots and rope handling, belaying, rappelling, and functional climbing movement. We’ll look at how the equipment we use works, and the tactics involved. We tend to do some top rope climbing, where the rope is hung above us from the top of a shorter cliff. Some climbs we might try are Weissner Slab, Wet Wall, First Crack, Ancient Way, Diagonal, Finger Locks or Cedar Box, Twin Oakes, Northern Pillar, Upper Refuse, Beginners Route, as well as routes at Owl’s Head.

Intermediate Rock Course:

Polish up those basic skills, warm up on a top rope, and get ready to follow some routes that are led by your guide. We will discuss advanced belay methods, knots and hitches for multi-pitch climbing, and more advanced climbing movement like hand, fist, and foot jams. We will discuss anchor design and physics. For parties of 3 or more, we will refine our skills by top roping progressively more challenging routes. There are so many routes to choose from, too many to list in fact!  We can help suggest routes that you might enjoy, in addition to ones you might suggest.

Advanced Rock Programs

Guided Climbs: We can take you on your objectives. We would be happy to suggest some of the best routes in the east.

We can set you in motion to climb on your own. Simple to complex anchors and climbing site management will increase your proficiency at the crag. We’ll discuss all applicable knots and hitches, anchors considerations, materials, hardware, rappelling, edge negotiation, risk assessments and bottom considerations. These are our most popular programs.

We can shorten it for people who have some previous rock climbing experience, but it revolves mostly around natural anchoring skills.

We are experienced educators who can create a positive learning environment, a reasonable and logical learning progression, and a series of comprehensive debriefs to get you thinking.

Scout Climbing & BSA Climbing Merit Badge

We run these programs at a 5 to 1 ratio! Please contact us in advance to discuss location options, group size, needs and special pricing. Matt is a registered Climbing Merit Badge Counselor.  Matt has met the requirements for BSA’s Climb On Safely program.  Many other commercial programs do not meet these requirements!  Whether it’s just a climbing experience or work for a badge, we can meet your needs.

Professional Development

We are licensed to provide programs through the American Mountain Guides Association. We provide the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course and Assessment as well as the popular Climbing Wall Instructor Certification Program(CWI) program .

Ragged Mountain Guides provides the AMGA CWI program at Prime Climb, in Wallingford, CT. We can provide the program at other facilities at your request.

While many of these climbs are in close proximity to the road and car, some approaches can take upwards of an hour, with a 30 lb backpack.
